You can't give what you don't have

If you notice yourself becoming overwhelmed, easily irritated ask yourself the question "am I taking care of myself". If you are running on empty that is going to be reflected in the quality of what you can give. Stop telling yourself its noble to run yourself into the ground. Lets be honest, its just stupid, and its not taking you closer to your goals.

Stop telling yourself its noble to run yourself into the ground

We need to nourish ourselves so that we are strong, so that we are brave and we can do what we were put here to do. If we are running on empty we get distracted, we disconnect from our own truth and start to pushed around by the expectations of others. If you don't fill back up you get lost, you forget what you intended and you are just trying to catch up with everything required of you. Step out of this mess, give yourself some space and do something that nourishes your soul and brings you back to yourself.

You can't give what you don't have. If your tank is empty you are likely to give off only emptiness despite good intentions. Empty work, empty acts of love and support, empty listening...you cant nourish others on empty. You are just 'zombying' around going through the motions. You deprive people of your presence and your light when you dont look after yourself. You are sharing a B grade product. You think you are showing up fully because your exhausted, but when your tank is empty you never show up fully for anyone. You only teach emptiness to your those around you, including children and loved ones. We teach what we are not what we say. We can't offer happiness or joy unless we are living it. Break the pattern of learned helplessness, ask for help, take some time, say no.

I do lots of things to fill my tank back up, its especially important if you work in a role that involves helping others. My favourites are walking Benji quietly in the morning, watering my garden, pranayama (yogic breathing), reading spiritual books, writing, a gratitude practice, yoga and intuitive movement. If I don't do these things, I don't have inspiration to share, I don't have energy to listen to people that need to be heard, I don't have original ideas and I don't feel confident in who I am.
